Please keep in mind that some NPCs wander. Before declaring an action with a wandering NPC, you may want to get information on where they are. You also have the option of declaring actions with conditions, such as "I cut off the pixies head.. if she is anywhere in the underdark" That way you wont be declaring an action that may take more than one turn of travel time to complete.
NPCs have loyalty ratings. These ratings are built up (or lost) by your actions taken with them. Loyalty ratings fade with time. Negative ratings take longer to fade than positive ratings. Giving an NPC "trade goods" that you craft each week with your create items skills will build loyalty quickly. Pressing your NPC friends for information too hard will lower thier loyalty.
NPCs see a lot. They are a great source of information. Talking with them counts as an action and gets you experience. Take advantage of your NPC friends! You can ask them to do almost anything. They may do it, if they have the ability and are loyal enough to you!
